This qualitative paper, which I had the opportunity to author in conjunction with senior researchers at UCSF Osher Center of Integrative Medicine, and part of an intervention that I played a key role in developing in the initial stages, describes the impact of a somatic relational group movement intervention on people with dementia, attending to impacts on implicit and procedural memory. These days there is more emphasis on the parts of memory that are not explicit, that involve conscious knowing, but rather implicit, that involve emotion, movement, and other ways of knowing, as being so important to the self within the field of psychology. This study points to how somatic education practices can impact implicit memory, contributing to the quality of life for people who have lost access to explicit memory.
